How do societies coping with the transition from authoritarian and totalitarian rule cope and what role do intermediary institutions play in such processes? Poul F. Kjaer was invited to present an ITEPE perspective on these questions at the workshop ‘Good Governance and Informality’ in Berne on the 3 July 2015. In his presentation Kjaer presented a comparative and long-term perspective on such transformations looking into the post 1945 transitions in Western Europe and the Southern European transitions of the 1970s and how these might inform our understanding of post-communist transitions in Central and Eastern Europe.
