Action Research

I have pursued my interest in architecture not only through classical research but also through a consultancy firm that I ran with a colleague from 2006 to 2013. This firm, named Imitio (to indicate the Tardean legacy), offered sociological analyses of architecture and urban planning. The work I did in Imitio amounted to a kind of action research where I employed research findings in consultancy services. The level of application varied and included huge urban-development projects in Sweden as well as several prestigious competitions in Denmark. In the various projects, I have collaborated with some of the leading architectural offices in Denmark and Europe (e.g. BIG, Henning Larsen Architects, Lundgaard & Tranberg, MVRDV, West 8, and White Architects). In addition to standard architectural and urban-development projects, Imitio collaborated with architects on utilizing Bruno Latour’s notion of matters of concern in urban and regional planning. This resulted in an award-winning project that was later theorized and published as an academic contribution (see here). Imitio’s work also revolved around the notion of atmospheres and employed this in an atmospheric approach to urban planning.
